Evaluation Seven

Evaluation Seven : Text Format

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Doing the preliminary task was a good starter for me rather that rushing straight into the real product, this is because I had never constructed a real magazine before and had very limited knowledge on how to put them together and what was involved. I also had limited Photoshop skills and was not sure on the conventions.

In the school magazine I did not use a studio take photos or even an appropriate location. I took approximately 3 images and used quick decision to use them. This was deemed as a bad idea as I was only able to pick from three images they did not seem suitable for the cover. This experience made me aware that during the real production I was to take as many images as possible to allow a large variety of photos to choose from which I am able to use and adapt to the magazine. In my preliminary task I had also edited a pair of glasses into the model, I found this difficult and not very effective, which told me during the real production that I would have to dress the model appropriately to stop creating extra and unnecessary work for myself. Another element I found was to ensure I chose a suitable location which would either be easy to edit out or be apart of the photo as I took images in front of lots of objects so editing out the background was very difficult.

During my preliminary task I minimal planning and was making decisions as I go such as colour schemes, layout and design. This made me spend lots of time in the process as I had to keep experimenting different things which was time consuming and unnecessary. With the main task I was able to have clear guidelines and make efficient planning and research to see what would attract my audience. Planning was also crucial in terms of meeting the requirements in detail and efficiency. I excelled in planning and research in the main task which meant that my product was professional but effective as well.

Editing the images have also improved from my preliminary task, in the preliminary task I was able to use the layering tools and magic wand, but not to a professional standard. In the main task I was able to use lots of different techniques such as gradients, embossing text and many others to create a realistic and stylish look. In addition I was also able to edit the hue, saturation and darkness of the images to create a more stylised image. The preliminary task was also very limited in the variety of shots used in the contents pages which seems dull and repetitive so in my main task I ensures a multiple variances to make it more interesting and unusual.

Time allowance was also important as in the preliminary task I only had a couple hours to do the task, this meant that it gave me an idea of the sort of pace I would have to work out but with more detail and research. It enabled me to plan out my deadlines and what had to be done by what dates to ensure I have contingency times to rectify any problems which is invaluable in the production.

Overall doing the preliminary task allowed me a greater understanding on how to do the task and revealed the level of detail and care I will have to put into it to make it as effective as I can. It allows me to create a better product and foreshadow any problems that may arise.

Example of Using Technology : Aids Evaluation Six

Evaluation Six: Text Format
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the project?

Technology is a fast growing trend, it now helps us advance in taking images, editing images and putting things together to get a final product, through this project I was able to see the advantages of technology and how it makes production easier.

Camera:
I felt one of the most important technologies I used during this production was the camera I used to take all my pictures.  Canon 550D DSLR which is my preferred type due to its simple interface and reliability compared to other branded cameras such as Nikon, even the shape of the camera was suitable to my usage with small hands and its light weight.  Using a digital camera gave me a immediate advantage over anyone taking images with a film camera. This is because I was able to take photos and check them on the screen of the camera and see if the lighting, contrasts and angles were suitable, whereas using a film camera I would have to take all the pictures all at once, process them and then get them printed before I could check if all the elements were correct, which would also be very costly as I would have to print out hundreds of photos. After this I would have had to scan them into a computer making the whole task a lot more time consuming, especially as my production required lots of different photoshoots, models and test shots. Lastly having a digital camera enabled me to have clear photos which would not be blurry. Therefore having a digital camera has advanced my work by a large amount as I have full control over my photos. I conduced many different photoshoots which varied between studio locations, outdoors and indoor events. For the studio shoot location I set up a white back drop light by Interfit portrait photography lighting. By having trigger lighting on this brought the lighting on only when I took the photo giving a professional look and effect to my photos. For this shoot I used an 18-55mm 4.6 aperture lens which enabled detailed photos and I wide range of possible angles to access. Next I set up an identical camera on a tripod focused on the set. I then hooked this up with another camera which enabled me to create a time lapse of my whole photo shoot as proof.  For all outdoors and events images I found that I had to take more care in where I place my models to ensure the lighting and shadows were not blocking my models position, by having a digital camera I was able to check the quality immediately.  The camera allowed me to have professional looking photos and really increased my chances of having an excellent product.

Editing Photos:
(Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0)
To edit and create my product I primarily used Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0, this is a photo editing tool which has allowed me to lots of different effects, edits and make changes to my images which is crucial to making magazines. This programme advances over any programme such as paint which is very basic and limited. There are endless amounts of things I used on Photoshop but the prime tools that I used to create my production were tools such as layering, liquidation, clone tool and using the different gradient tools. Using the layering allowed me to create a picturesque look for my magazine, and allowed me to place different things on my magazine such s text, secondary images and image effects. It makes my magazine less plain and more interesting and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Liquidation allowed me to fill in blank spaces or parts where the magic wand had cut parts of my image off. It came handy to also squeeze and bloat certain parts of my image to make it all fit onto the page.  The clone tool was also useful to get rid of any impurities on my models face such as unwanted hair, spots of skin colorants. Gradients were also a key tool I used, this is because my magazine is heavily dependant on layering and placing things together so the gradient allowed me to make things more transparent and allowed me to make certain elements bolder and stand out when required.
(Picasa)
Picasa is an easy and quick photo editing tool that focuses on the lighting and contrasts of the photos. For many of my images I edited them on Picasa before importing them onto Photoshop, this is because I was able to make lighting more prominent using a simple slide bar. Picasa also enabled me to straighten any photos which were taken on a slight angle; other tools include blurring images, creating glows, giving the image a temperature. Another key tool I Used on Picasa was the crop tool, I felt it was more effective to use the crop tool on Picasa over Photoshop as it had set dimensions which would make it more equal rather than using freehand which could be mistaken.

Creative Freedom:
Within this production I felt that technology had broadened my creative freedom on how I want to portray things. For example through the research, proposals and pre productions I did not have to stick to word documents and power points. But instead I was able to use programmes such as Prezi which is a zooming presentation device which allows me to zoom and fly around the screen as a presentation which makes it more interesting and fun. I was also able to make videos, animations to showcase other parts of my project. It shows the different varieties technology has to offer and how media industries are competitive with technology and trying to out do the other. One programme I enjoyed using was Adobe Flash to create my animation, I felt it was simple but affective; I used an image of two people that would be considered my target audience and made squiggly lines as their mouths which moved when they spoke. To make the voices different I recorded myself using a microphone and imported the clip to Audacity which is a sound editor, using this I was able to make myself sound different for the two characters. I made myself sound very girly and squeaky and manly and rough. I felt this was different and really showed that technology plays a big part in every day life.
Lastly the internet was very useful to help my creative freedom. I was able to look at YouTube and videos on tutorials to teach me how to do things on Photoshop and editing skills. This was invaluable to me as it showed how technology was able to act as a teaching tool. Through tutorials and videos I was not restricted in the design of my magazine due to the ability to do anything I wanted with it.

How did you attract/address your audience?

Front Cover:

The front cover is very important as it will be the first impressions of the magazine on the reader. To ensure I attract my target audience I made my magazine a double edition where they can choose which front cover they want. This gives them freedom and makes them feel less pressurised into buying the one type of magazine. Both the models of my magazine are relatively attractive and both use direct eye contact with the reader, this creates intimacy and a relationship, creating an urge to buy the magazine. As my target audience are people who are on a relatively low income, being students, I decided to put lots of free and exclusive sell lines into my front cover, this means that the reader will feel they are getting their moneys worth and it is not being wasted on their favourite magazine. Other sell lines will also attract the audience for the gratifications of personal identity and information, I included sell liens that feature learning how to DJ, and different reviews from artists to give the reader an insight of professional views and how to make it big themselves. This aspiration value would attract the reader.

Contents Page:

Again in my contents page I highlight the fact that my magazine is a limited double edition, this is to reinforce its exclusive and unique values, which appeals to the audience as they are attracted to more unique styles and differentiations from stereotypical materials. The layout I used it very simple, it consists of columns and headers which are easy to identify and groups the different articles together. This appeals to my reader as they will be able to navigate through easily and increases their gratification for relaxation. I also included many different images to create a artistic collage layout. This attracts my target audience as they are very creative and are interested in photography. The fact that all the images correspond and all link and have the same sort of tones is even more appealing to the eye. This also links with the gratification of personal identity as hopefully at least one of the images would resemble my target audience/reader which would make them feel more involved in my magazine. My contents is also attractive due to the information given within the article names, it gives the audience a sense of knowledge and allows them to choose whether they like the article or not.

Double Page Spread 1:

In the first double page spread, I started off with a very large picture of my two models as in introduction of the exclusive interviews. This appeals to my audience as the image would resemble images you would find on tumblr (a photo blogging website) which they are interested in. Also the models create a relationship with the reader as again are using direct eye contact and creates a sense of mystery, persuading the audience to read the article. Also the costumes the models are wearing would attract the audience through personal identity as it reinforces the readers own behaviour and fashion, this makes them recognisable and comfortable. I also included a website in the top right corner to appeal to the audience. This is because my target audience are very familiar with the internet and would be attracted to internet selling techniques, as the website would offer more exclusives and information. The choise of pull line would attract the reader as it talks about the deep underground sounds; this suggests the article will be talking about the underground dub step which automatically attracts the audience as my music magazine is aimed at people who love dubstep and drum and bass, increasing their aesthetic enjoyment. The actual article itself is a short introduction of the two artists and their collaboration; it is more from an editorial angle and is informative for the reader. It highlights their successes and their hard work which creates motivation for my target audience members who are also aspiring to make it big into the industry. Lastly another attraction to the double page spread would be the title of the introduction’ mixing it up’ this is because it is a pun, it has a play on the words which are commonly used in producing and djing, but instead I used it in terms of artistic collaboration.

Double Page Spread 2:

In the female double page spread I decided to make it a fun article. This is to fulfil the gratification of personal enjoyment and relaxation. The pull quotes that I used in this article would all draw attention from the reader this is because they all have highlighted words which would appeal to the reader such as; give a damn, fasted growing, dubstep and drum and bass. These words are all linked to the music genre and links to personal identity. One of the sell lines also shows the artists feistiness as she speaks her mind this is also appealing as my target audience are very outspoken and like a bit of flair. I again used lots of images on the top of the article; this is attractive as it shows the variety and different angles of my artist, again appealing through the photographic layout. One of small but main attractions on the double page spreads is the internet feed. I included a section where the reader could find out more online or even contact the artists themselves, this is important as many readers would want to know more about the artists of see how the progress as an artists so having an online feed would appeal to them. There are three varieties (facebook, twitter, soundcloud) of how they can follow the artists which gives them options as well.

Double Page Spread 3:

For the last article I wanted to make the audience feel they are getting a personal and initiate story from it, the article itself is written by the artist. I used an image that filed up one half of the page which meant the artists looked exposed to the reader and suggests that nothing is hidden in the article. This in the gratification uses means they are getting information and a sense of personal identity. As they find out a lot about CAMO and his life’s struggles. This would be relative to the reader which is appealing as they would be able to understand and aspire to fight through.  There are also speech marks at the start and end of the article to emphasises that the article was written/ spoken by the artists himself and was not written by someone else or edited. All other parts of the article follow the layout from the female double page spread.

Overall:

Throughout all my magazine I used a corresponding colour scheme which is appealing as it shows my reader that as a magazine we are in sync and relative to each other and have the same genre. The colour scheme also shows the professionalism and the tight industry dubstep and drum and bass are.  Also throughout I use lots of different angled and shots for my images to show its differences and varieties. It appeals to the reader as it shows the different stereotypes that can be shown. The bold and stylised font is also appealing as it connotes strength and branding which is important. Other techniques included to ensure sales would be attracting my target audience with free gifts, downloads and exclusive information. This appeals to my target audience are conscious about money and not earning very high income means they are not very likely to pay high prices for a magazine. With free samples and downloads I am able to attract the target audience as to being worth the money and persuading them that they need to have the magazine to hear the exclusive stories.

Evaluation Four

Aid to Evalution Four: Interviews and Insight to Target Audience

Evaluation Four : Text form

Who would be the audience for your media product?

My product would appeal to ages 16-25, they are young adults who are maturing and starting to become more independent and exploring their own freedom and having as much fun as they can before adulthood comes. It is also the stage where they are most individual and unique in terms of their own style and mentality. They’re not prone to stereotyping and understand the public better than their earlier teenage years. Also they are more likely to socialise and go to different events independently and go out and meet new and different people. The majority of my target audience will either be in collage, sixth form, working or in university so there is always a lot of different socialisation around them; furthermore there is a lot of fresher’s night and cheap nights out so they will have the spare money to buy my magazine.

In their spare time when they are not in education or working they will be going out to different events whether it is raves, clubs, parties, gigs concerts or just a local drink at the pub, also occasionally they will also be gatherings of friends and they will play drinking games and dance. In the day time there is a lot of socialising by going to the local shopping centres, going down to Skate Park, graffiti centres, producing artistic materials or even just watching TV and spending time on social websites such as facebook and twitter. A lot of my target audience will also be quite committed to a hobby some may be interested in dancing, dj’ing, graphics, photography.

As my target audience usually have quite a hectic life a lot of the time they will not have time to eat proper meals and will normally go for fast food or food which is unhealthy and sugary. This keeps their sugar levels up and they are able to go on about their day. However if they do get hangovers they will always go for a cup of coffee or tea to warm themselves up.

Boys they have a simplistic but bold look, they all have the similar sort of shirts and trousers but they can vary in different ways like colours, texture and style. They all seem to look comfortable and seen as ‘cool’. A lot of them wear hoodies, this suggests that they are always ready for the weather as they go out all the time and are prepared for the worse. Many of the boys will wear things like snapbacks and woolly hats. This is just part of the style and enhances their overall look.

For girls there are a variety of different looks compared to the boys, for the girls there are styles where they are bold and extravagant for example extreme dyed hair and bold makeup and revealing clothes. Or they have a cute simplistic look with minimal makeup and natural wavy hair; also the clothes they wear are occasionally quite floral and delicate. Another look for girls would be the ‘guy’ look where they also wear the skinny jeans plain hoody, trainers and cap this suggests that they don’t care about their appearance and will dress however they want. There is a big interest in tattoos and piercings, they all have quite bold or unique tattoos and not the usual everyday tattoos you see on average people. For example they would have full sleeves of tattoos or unique delicate designs going down their backs or they may have something that is very personal to them. Piercings are also quite popular, main areas of ears, tongues and lip having piercings on the tongue and lip are quite rebellious and many people would despise of them. But being of the social group they do not care about what the community think.
<!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]-->
<!--[endif]-->
The people in my target audience are quite creative; they have an eye for being bold and individual. So many people in my target audience are aspiring, photographers, fashion/graphics designers, producers, Dj’s, singers, dancers and beauticians. They are all really determined and not willing to give up their dream easily, this tells me they are hard workers and risk takers. The real life and inspiring stories in my media product will engage with the reader and make them feel belonging and keep them going.

I found this part of my evaluation very easy as I had previously written a detailed analysis of my audience in my audience profile, this meant that I was able to copy the analysis and just change it around.

Evaluation Three

Presentational Response to Evaluative Question Two

Evaluation Three: Text Format
What kind of institution might distribute your media product and why?

There are a couple of choices for which institution would be most appropriate to distribute my magazine; I had to think carefully on what characteristics my own media product has and what publisher would be able to potentially increase sales.

Bauer Media is a privately owned publishing group, it is worldwide and offers 300 magazines in 15 different countries, their business is built on influential media brands with millions of personal relationships with engaged readers and listeners. Through research I found many of the media they distributed is mainstream and appeal to a mass audience. This would not be ideal for my magazine as my magazine is aimed at a relatively small target audience so my magazine would not gain interest from the distributor. Also being published in 15 different countries would not be ideal also as my magazine is based in the UK and there would be no point in publishing world wide.

Condé Nast is a worldwide publishing company that is accountable for distributing the world’s most popular lifestyle magazines. I felt already that because it is a worldwide publishing company it would be unsuitable for my magazine as stated before, I have a niche market and would not appeal globally.

The National Magazine Company are responsible for distributing Cosmopolitan, Elle and BAZARR, it is one of the largest diversified media companies. They work within the UK and have a generally balanced appeal to women and men which is something that would appeal to my magazine. However it does not have any other music magazines as they currently distribute a low 22 magazines in the UK. This could work as an advantage to my magazine as it is a niche market and would be better off with an independent distributor. Also being established in the UK would act as an advantage as my magazine is based and targeted at the younger generation of the UK. They would find interest in my magazine as it could generate a high market share as being one of the only music magazines NMC are distributing and its differentiation to the other magazines it would be a unique selling point.

IPC media produces over 60 iconic media brands and they have a core audience of men, mass market women and upmarket women. They distribute magazines such as NME, Marie Claire and Pick Me Up. I felt being a more mainstream distributor with the three core audience focus IPC would not be an ideal distributer for my magazine DubBass. As my audience is aimed more for the younger generation and would not appeal to their core audiences, however this could be an advantage as my magazine would be unique and would increase their audience range. So I believe that IPC media would be a good choice to distribute my magazine, however due to the similar product of NME and being a mainstream distributor I believe that IPC would not be the best choice.

Evaluation Two

Textual and Image Response to Evaluation Two

Evaluation 2

Evaluation Two: Text Format
How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine is representing a certain social group where people favourite the music genres dubstep and drum and bass. Within this the social group, through research these are mainly 16-25 year olds whom are in education who have a creative flair in their personality and talents such as music, photography, dance. Also the research I did shows that they are heavily influenced by the music and have a high interest of going to social events which include raves, gigs, parties, concerts and festival. They are a tight community of people and they are influenced by fashion that is unique, comfortable yet sexy and stylish. Their attitude is carefree and quite flamboyant. To appeal to them I would have to tailor my magazine to suit their likes. To represent the social group I had to cast my models appropriately ensuring they fit my social group themselves. I decided to use people that are from the social group and to exaggerate on parts of them to appeal to my audience. I also had to ensure that I did not confuse my audience with other music genres such as indie or RnB but I avoided using for example chains and printed t shirts which resemble RnB or pretty floral dresses and denim for indie.

On the front cover I had my two feature artists, for my female model had dark long hair which was stylised but rough and wild, this connotes freedom, rebellion and power with the colour black. Her makeup was quite heavy within the eyes and lips which made her facial features stand out and enhanced her unique look. Overall her facial features and hair represented the more feminine side of my audience profile as she was quite glamorous but slightly rebellious. Her body language was quite suggestive at times in her front cover and double page spread, as she was arching her back slightly, tilting her head signifying that she is confident and wants to stand out of the crowd. This is very appealing to males and females as the social group do not like to be insipid but lie to be confident and bold which my model portrays. Enhancing this idea is her clothing, they are examples of what a ‘’raver’’ would wear as it has large slits down the sides of her top with American top with motorbikes on them, this is comfortable and allows excessive movement. She is also wearing suspender tights which are bold and sexy. This look suggests her comfort with sexuality which also appeals to the audience as they are very care free and have interest in sexuality. Overall the look of my model is a good representation of the sort of artist my audience profile would look up to and aspire to be, this is because she has a dress sense which matches their exact likes and interests and also being very confident is appealing.  The only prop I used throughout my magazine was the microphone she is holding, I only wanted to use one prop as I felt it would distract my audience from the real essence of my artists. I used the prop with this model only to signify that she is a vocalist.

The other male feature artists also had dark short hair; I thought this was appropriate as I wanted someone with a more urban flare to add style to my magazine. The darkness of his hair also connoted a warmth but also seriousness.  He had a very natural and normal look for an artists but this was intentional as I wanted my audience to relate to him as someone who is normal and just like them. The costume I asked him to wear is following on from the urban style; he wore dark wash jeans, a plain white t-shirt, high tops and a watch. He is representive because he shows the audience that he is not cocky or self-assured as he is wearing clothes that the audience wears. Also it is quite simple but only has a slight sense of style with his watch and high tops. The whole look of my male model was to involve the audience more and create a direct relation between the artist and audience, which makes the article more intimate and personal.

The other models I used all have slightly different types of styles and intentions, some of the males had heavily urbanised fashionable costumes, like a red lumberjack coat, red flat cap and red high tops, he was to represent the more creative and bolder males in the social group and also to show the extremes of the fashion sense. Another one of my models had sleek and longer blonde hair sweeping down, beautiful jawline and striking eyes. He had a vintage edge to his costume and had a typical indie featuring ear piece. I used him to appeal more so to the female readers as he is very attractive, it could also attract males in the sense that he is appealing to women so they would aspire to be like him. The last of my male models represented the more established artists in the industry, he had a sleek black blazer on which connoted his professionalism, and however he also had on jeans and trainers and a watch to show he still has an urban edge and has not forgotten his roots. He is also very attractive, appealing to women, and the location he has been shot shows a city. The city signifies that he is in a busy environment and is on top of the world. He is used for the gratifications of escapism and personal identity.

The other female models also show a variation. I have one model that has bright red hair that is tied back into a pony tail, she is wearing a simple white and red top and she is wearing minimal makeup. Her red hair signifies that she is rebellious and likes to have a sense of danger. She represents the girls I the social group who are naturally pretty and those who are very simplistic with their style and taste. She shows the audience that not all artists have to be extravagant and flawless to make it into the industry.
I have two models that are blonde, they both have striking facial features and both wearing plain but comfortable clothing, again they are representing the more natural girls but this time including hair colour. One of my last models has dark brown hair but is wearing very revealing clothing, she is dancing on a podium and she is making a hand gesture. The movement of the tassels from her top and the way her body is positioned shows that she is moving fast and with lots of energy. The image is representive as it shows the social group having fun and really involving themselves into the music, which is shown by this low angle longshot.

As dubstep and drum and bass come from underground scenes I picked my locations to represent the upbringings of this music genre. For some of the shots I used a brick wall as a background for my models, this is because it represented the streets and the outdoors. This creates a connection between my audience and magazine as they recognise the location. For other images I used a dark background where you cannot see behind the model. This was effective because it resembled a rave, gig or concert where it would usually be dark and only the flash from a camera is visible. This means we recognise the audience’s high interest of social events which makes them feel that we understand and are a part of the social group.

Finalising my representation of the social group throughout my magazine I made the tone of it suitable. In the front cover and contents page I had made reference to lots of different artists that are not particularly mainstream but are known to them. This allows the audience to realise that the magazine is tailored to their likes. Also I have also made lots of referencing to different events and awards that only people within the social group would have heard of. In the articles I had made two different tones to each one, for the male artists I had made it very serious but realistic, as I wanted the audience to relate to him, show his battle in the industry, as many of my target audience are also hopefuls in the industry so it would create a personal atmosphere with the reader. The female article however is written in a friendly and happy tone, it is a more general interview and it is for the readers who are reading for enjoyment and curiosity.

Documentary Response to Evaluation One

Evaluation One: Text Format

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Throughout my magazine I wanted it to be stylised but simplistic as it has a new but unconventional new genre of music; Dubstep and Drum and Bass. I wanted simplicity but with also an urban style, however Dubstep and drum and bass have a target audience very similar with indie so when making my initial designs I had to consider if I wanted to have it more urban and simple or busy and indie/rock. I decided to develop the convention of having both a busy and simplistic magazine by making the front cover busy and other parts of the magazine simple and stylish.

Front Cover:

For my front cover I decided to have two front covers, I decided it would be good to allow my target audience to choose the cover the like as the edition of my magazine has a double feature of two artists and not just one. This makes it appealing because the audience feel they have control over the magazine.

As a typical convention of a music magazine I included a mast head on the top of my magazine front page. The masthead I have used is very bold and simplistic. I wanted the masthead to be stylised so I picked a font which suggested sleekness but also unique. I used a slight drop shadow to make to ensure it does not blend in with the rest of the page and inform the reader what they are reading and make it more eye catching when picking a magazine. The colour I used was a teal dark colour, this connotes a cool and stylish feel and makes the reader more inclined to picking up the magazine as it does not look too ‘in your face’ which conventional magazines have. The name of my magazine ‘Dub bass’ is a mixture of the two music genres that is featured in the magazine; Dubstep and Drum and Bass, I thought it would appropriate as the genre is not yet mainstream so there are limited amounts of magazines with the same genre, therefore the target audience will recognise the genre immediately and realise it is a new magazine. Also the two syllable word is also very catchy and has an urban vibe.

I used a longshot of my model lying on her back with her feet up. This is typically an unconventional shot for a front cover as they are typically close-ups or medium shots but I felt this was appropriate to grab the reader’s attention as she is making eye contact and her body language is suggestive appealing to the audience. The way my model is dressed and her body language also appeals to the uses of gratifications of personal identity as my model is quite mysterious and engages the audience to find out more and to aspire and admire.

With the different sell lines I used a drop shadow this is to make them stand out and imply that the sell lines are important as it looks like they are news headliners which draws the attention from my readers. The fonts I used correspond to each other as they are all bold and have the reoccurring colour scheme I have.  This makes it look professional and invites the target audience to pick it up and read the magazine.

The top pull quote offers a free download, on the last word I ensure I made the word ‘more’ stand out because I wanted the readers to feel as if they are getting the most out of their money, which is appealing. It also represents the different forms of media we offer which tells the audience that we are up to date and are available online. I used the drop show tool with this one and used a slight outline to make it subtle but noticeable.

Some of the other conventions I followed for the front page was the use of a barcode, this signifies to the person reading that it is for sale and I also included a price, however I did not include a European price, as research I have made shows that Dubstep and drum and base music genre is not yet popular in the EU and I fell that it would not by necessary to publish to the EU yet as it has not become mainstream.

Conventionally I also included a website, to follow the new technological trends, the date of issue and I also included a small strapline along these saying,’ The first dupstep and drum and bass magazine’ this is to create a sense that the magazine is very exclusive and unique and promoting it this way will differentiate from my competitors.

Using secondary images was also a convention and I have used this method to promote and to sell my magazine, I three different images and each one would appeal to a different segment of my target audience. This creates a sense of belonging and personal identity and the readers will feel more inclined to read the magazine.

Contents Page:

I wanted to use a more unconventional way of laying out my contents page, however it was not completely unique as I saw a similar contents page in a music magazine so it is not completely unique but through using it as inspiration I am ensured that the contents page was effective as I was intrigued and understood the layout. I also changed my mind after the second initial draft to use a double page spread to hold my contents page.

I wanted my contents page to have more of a visual take on the contents page to allow my readers to identify favourite artists and producers and turn to the page straight away. The images I used show a variety in my magazine and are representations of the different articles, this tells the audience that I have a diversity within my magazine. I also wanted the look to resemble a collage, this is because I felt my target audience would appreciate the acknowledgement that photography is a big interest so having a collage makes it very appealing and makes the magazine seem very suited to them.

I used a conventional banner at the top to clearly state what the pages was considering I have used a double page spread and it also gives me a chance to write a small editor’s note on the left hand top corner to make the magazine more personal and relevant. I used the existing brand imagery to make my magazine continuous and ensured all colour schemes were consistent and followed on throughout.  I also decided to include two images of my own front covers to acknowledge the fact that it was a double edition and to show the reader the other cover to the one they have purchased.

I used the appropriate highlights for the different types of the articles and colonised them to make it easier for the reader to read and use. I also used the contrasting colours to make the fonts stand out and be aesthetically appealing.  The page numbers are in a bold and often highlighted in boxes which emphasises the page number.

Double Page Spreads:

Following my double edition idea I decided to make three double page spreads, one featuring both of them and one each afterwards.

For all the pages there were a couple of conventions which I followed. As I felt it was important to keep the name of the magazine in the mind at all time and to show that it was exclusives the audience were reading so I included little mastheads with a black placard over the top saying ‘exclusive’ on all the double page spreads. Another convention I followed was the page numbers, I only put them in one corner on the double page spreads in a light soft grey, and this makes it easier for the audience to navigate the pages. Lastly I included a web address on all the double page spreads on the top right pages, it is small but large enough for the reader to notice it again it relates to the other mediums and which would please the audience as being a part of the technology which the target audience are heavily dependent on.

The first double page spread consisted of one of the best images I had taken, it showed both my models sitting on a chair but the female was more dominant and he was more shy with their body language, this relates to the articles after where we find that the girl models article is more confident and friendly whilst the males is more serious and shy. The costume I used for my models go well with my colour scheme as it followed the blue and grey. I used very large stylised writing to introduce the pair as ‘PAMELA and CAMO’ it is the same font as the title but I intended this so it would look of importance and show that it is one of the main features of the magazine. I also included a small introduction to the pair and wrote about their past and their future this is to give the audience a taste of the articles but not give too much away adding to the suspense and curiosity of the audience.

For the single feature double page spreads they both follow some of the new conventions music magazines have, for both I included on how to keep up with the artists on social networking sites. This is appealing to the audience as they are able to satisfy their social needs and it relates to their own social networking sites. It was important for me to include them as technology is such a growing trend in the generation which my audience profile are based in. For both I also included lots of pull quotes to give a rough idea of the personality and the tone of the magazine Also I included a bold introduction in large font to allow the reader to have a taster of the article and it would be their own choice to follow on reading or not. This is important because I always want my audience to feel as if they have control and not to pressurise them.

For the female feature I used lots of images of my model and placed them the entire top in black and white, all long shots. I then placed a fully coloured image on the left centre of the page. This is appealing to the eye as it has lots of different creative images to showcase. It is appealing as the reader is able to see the different personalities within the images and the models images make them feel aspirational and admiration for her confidence and stance.  The tone of this article is really friendly and bubbly, it is an interview and the reader is able to find out her secrets, feelings and attitudes to things. This fulfils the gratification of curiosity and entertainment and they are able to relax and enjoy a light hearted interview.

For the male I wanted to create a more serious looking article but still have the same style as the female article. I used on large image to fill the whole left side, again it is a longshot. I then created a small collage of images for the top of the right page. This is again to give the audience more variety and more interest into the article as having only one image may seem blank and un-interesting. I included pull quotes but I put them on the bottom corner, this is because for this article I wanted it to be a flowing story and wanted the reader to really engage with it instead of flickering around. The article is quite serious as it is about the artists rise and fall and how he had overcome them, it is to allow the readers to realise that artists are just normal people and they have worked hard to become part of the industry, it will tell the readers about how hard it is but how to overcome them. This satisfies their knowledge and belonging.

Overall I feel I have followed the main and logical conventions of a magazine, however I have challenged some in  a creative way and adapting the conventions to my own audience profiles needs, wants and interests. I feel I have adapted them well enough to properly appeal to my audience and generate interest.

Peer Assessing

To ensure my magazine is up to the highest possible standards, I got my friend Roberto Manfredi to peer assess my work. He picked out a couple mistakes and adjustments I can make to my magazine. This is valuable to me because it shows me precision in which quality has to be.

Photos Forgotten From Contact Sheet

Here are two images I forgot to put on my contact sheet from the last photoshoot.
These images are edited so they have lots of movement; I did this using the camera mode: shutter speed. The bright colours suggest that it is a lively environment and is part of an event.

Consent For Image Usage from High Frequency

Unfortunately due to technical difficulties and their email being hacked, High Frequency were not able to send me a formal official email to say I could use their images as long as I still have their logos in the image. However one of the directors were able to send me a confirmation over Blackberry Messenger. This is my proof :

Which One To Choose?

I am just putting the finishing touches on my magazine and I have come to a dilemma for one my double page spreads, I have two images that I can not decide on for it! There was three but I am heavily unsure on the third, but if it has more positive feedback then I would consider using it.

Second Double Page Spread Initial Drafts

Here are the second drafts of my DPS's, I am happy with the improvements made for the male DPS and think with more adjustments I will be able to make it look really professional and of high quality. However the girl DPS, I am not sure whether I like the first version more, however I have a couple of ideas and may be able to merge the two drafts together to make one final produce.

Second Contents Initial Draft

I think I have significantly improved this version of the contents page in comparison to the first two drafts, this one has more of a layout that I wanted and features more images which I intended. However the font still needs a lot of work and more precision is needed for the placement for images.

Second Front Cover Initial Draft

I am quite happy with this initial draft, it has a good layout and I like my pull lines as I think the font and colour schemes go well. I only did one second initial draft as I thought that as my magazine has a double issue I felt it would be more beneficial if the same layout is kept and the only change was to be the main image. However there is still more improvement before the final produce.

First Initial Double Page Spread Drafts

These are the initial drafts for my double page spreads, unlike my contents I feel I have done these well in the time I used. I liked the layouts and my ideas of colour schemes. However the top draft is incomplete because I started on the design but decided that I did not like the idea of a film strip as it was too theatrical and more related to film considering that I am producing a music magazine.
